Rosalin

18 ♡ she/her ♡ 2-3-0 Druid

Rosalin is a kind but shy Druid of the Jungle. She doesn't have many close friends, but spends a lot of her time at Greenfoot Hollow, hanging out with the other Druids. Her disability prevents her from going into battle as often as the other Druids, but when she does, she fights with a fiery vengeance. She is determined to keep the Bloons from taking over her home.

Her paw was broken when she was a small child. The bones have fused so that it is permanently curled inwards and under, causing her to have chronic pain and rendering that paw unusable. She uses forearm crutches to get around.

Personality

Rosalin has always been a soft, shy monkey by nature. A lack of social interaction growing up caused her to become even more of a loner.

She puts a lot of effort into seeming as non-threatening as possible - and this isn't for no reason, either. Because of her father's abuse, the slightest hint of anger or frustration in someone else's voice causes Rosalin to feel extreme anxiety and guilt. So she puts all her energy into making herself seem kind and gentle, wrapping everyone else's feelings in bubble wrap, just so no one else has to feel the same anxiety that she does, and making sure other monkeys feel comfortable around her - even despite all the pain she's in.

She is also very modest, and will downplay her skills and achievements if someone asks her about them. For example, she claims to "know a couple things about herbs" when asked if she has any medical knowledge, but is actually more skilled than your average first-year Druid healer apprentice, having grown up in a healers' den.

In the past, Rosalin had some pretty serious problems with pushing herself too hard. She was worried that she'd be forgotten and left behind again if she didn't "prove herself" to be "useful", thanks to the Legion's cruel treatment of her, and their constant attitude that she was worthless because she couldn't fight other monkeys. But with Millie's help, she's unlearned this, and no longer bases her worth on how long and hard she can fight for, or what she can contribute; she knows that she has worth simply because she's alive, and thus inherently deserves respect and kindness.

History

Early Childhood

Rosalin was born into the Legion. She lived a normal life for the first four years of her life - or about as normal a life as you can live as a child of the Legion.

When Rosalin was 4, her 17-year-old sister, Marion, attempted to run away. Jericho was almost an adult by this point, and had spent his adolescence sucking up to the Legion elites and collecting classified info, in the hopes of sharing it with COBRA or the Monkey Military and causing serious damage to them. Now that Jericho had a substantial amount of info, he decided to escape and lead a bunch of other teenagers with him. Among his group was Marion and Rosalin.

At some point during their dash through the jungle, Rosalin got separated from the group and ended up at the top of a very tall rock. A group of the Legion's footsoldiers were close behind them, so there was no time to safely go back down the path and rejoin the group. Seeing no other option besides jumping off the rock, little Rosalin jumped off the top of the rock. The fall caused her left foot to be crushed, broken in several places, along with two other fractures further up her leg. Jericho told everyone that there was no time to go back and get her, and that they all had to keep running. So, Rosalin was abandoned at the base of the rock, wounded and terrified. Everyone else managed to escape except her.

Because the Legion was entirely focused on assisting the Bloons and attacking the Monkey Military and COBRA, they had almost no medical technology. Their only healer was a ten-year-old in a cave, using herbs she'd found around the jungle. The healer was too afraid to set the broken bones in Rosalin's paw, because she would cry out in pain every time it was touched, so all she felt like she could do was give her herbs to help with the pain. This barely did anything, and Rosalin usually went days at a time without sleeping due to the intense pain.

Childhood, after the accident

Rosalin was disregarded by the rest of the Legion due to her injury, but was still forced to make tools after the age of eight. They always told her that she was practically worthless, that the Legion had done her a favor by even feeding her after her injury. She preferred to make baskets, as she was able to dye them or weave patterns into them, expressing herself through the work she was forced to do - though she was always bitter and angry about having to support the Legion at all.

None of the other kids wanted to play with Rosalin. Everyone was afraid of how her paw looked, and even if she hadn't been "scary" to them, no one wanted to play with a girl who was confined to the healer's den. Except, of course, the young medic of that base, who became like a big sister to Rosalin growing up.

To add insult to injury, Rosalin's father was emotionally abusive her whole childhood, especially after Rosalin got hurt. He barely visited her while she was still confined to the healer's den, and once she got out, he would regularly call her useless and a burden, or yell at her for not being able to do things due to her injury.

She spent her teenage years trying to learn how to use her druidic powers, starting when she was around ten. She knew that escaping on her own would be impossible, but she still hoped deep down that someday she'd escape and be able to help fight the Bloons.

Escape from the Legion

When Rosalin was 17, Ember turned himself into a small child to infiltrate the Legion and find out where the Bloons were coming from (so the Monkey Military could make a plan to stop them once and for all). Rosalin was the first one to find him. Thinking he was a lost child who had somehow ended up in Legion territory, she took him in. After a few days, Ember concluded that Rosalin wasn't really on their side, and revealed his true identity to her, along with his plan to find out where the Bloons were coming from. They visited a Legion elder together, and after Ember was told about the origin of the Bloons, he made a plan to break Rosalin out as well, knowing she'd never make it out on her own - she was too slow to just take off running, and didn't know any hidden paths where she could sneak out safely. He found a safe path through the forest, and that night, Ember led Rosalin out of Legion territory.

Life outside the Legion

After Rosalin escaped Legion territory, she met Millie, the adopted daughter of Ember. The two soon fell in love. When Rosalin started going to school that fall, she decided to go to the same school as Millie. In her life outside the Legion, Rosalin was still treated badly. She was sometimes asked why she even bothered to train if she would never be as good a fighter as the other monkeys, and when people thought she wasn't listening, they were much more... well, overt, about their feelings about her.

At first, Rosalin tried to ignore it and keep going on. But as she went on, the injustice of how she was treated all her life came crashing down on her. She was filled with a burning determination to prove her strength to the world, which did her more harm than good.

It took Rosalin a very long time to accept that she would still be loved even if she couldn't fight, and that everything she had to do to survive in the Legion wasn't her fault. Rosalin no longer fights to prove her worth, or to repay some imagined debt she acquired when she was just a kid. She fights out of an undying will to bring peace to the world.

Relationships

Millie
Girlfriend

Rosalin loves seeing how Millie actually acts like herself when they're alone together. Knowing that Millie was once always like that, that a few years ago, she was never harsh or cold or vicious, that she was a sweet, kind girl and not a killing machine... Rosalin just wants her to get better. All she wants for Millie is peace.

Marion
Sister

Rosalin and Marion aren't exactly close nowadays. Their relationship is strained, and they don't spend much time together, but Marion still wishes Jericho had been able to save her, so Rosalin wouldn't have gone through all that she did.

Fern
Friend

Because Rosalin and Fern both spend so much time at the Spring of Healing in Greenfoot Hollow, they're bound to hang out sometime. They read books together, and have plans to start a book club for the Druids of the Spring of Healing. Rosalin is trying to train Fern how to use Druidic powers, so she can also use vines to grab things, or defend herself if she is ever attacked. Fern's condition will keep her from ever fighting, but she seems to be picking up what Rosalin is teaching her pretty well.

Cirrus

Even though Cirrus is terrified of its sister, it seems to enjoy when Rosalin comes over. They've made cookies together a few times.

Ember

Seeing Ember being so understanding and kind towards his kids makes Rosalin jealous. Her parents both sucked, so she considers Ember more of a dad than her biological "father", even though they don't talk much anymore.
